Campaign for Continuing Care
The Campaign for Continuing Care was initiated in 2002 to help the Army Distaff Foundation/Knollwood respond to the growing and changing needs in the health care industry and to keep pace with other organizations in the Washington, D.C. area. This campaign will ensure that Knollwood can provide state-of-the-art facilities and continue to fulfill its mission of providing secure, affordable retirement housing and health care services to retired career officers of all uniformed services and their female relatives. Funds raised by the Foundation are used solely to support theses important capital improvement projects.
The first phase of the campaign focused on the addition the Special Care Unit for individuals with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The 25-person facility opened to Knollwood residents and the public, on a space available basis, in May 2008. The facility contains state-of-the-art amenities, including a secure walking garden, music room, soothing bathing spas, and recreation spaces designed to stimulate minds and encourage memory rehabilitation.
The second phase of the campaign will focus on the renovation of the Health Services Center, the skilled nursing facility at Knollwood. The renovation project will fully modernize the facility, which was built in the 1960s, through the addition of more private rooms, separate dining and activity facilities, new lighting, and improved electrical and fire safety systems. These renovations and updates are anticipated to cost between $10-$12 million. |
